I’d like to reiterate my hatred for the two-for-one. Pacers down five, Haliburton tosses up a contested three (miss), Brunson scores on the other end, all so Indy can rush a wild 30-footer. Analytics say I’m wrong. I say always get the best shot. – 9:13 PM

Fun first half to the series. Knicks hung in just fine with the Pacers’ pace, lead 69-62. Haliburton scored 10 of his 14pts in the 2nd to keep them afloat. Brunson has 18.
Defense + paint a huge concern, as expected.

Mikal Bridges has been great this half. He’s got 12 points, yes, but his defense on Haliburton has been tremendous and he’s been an on-ball shot disruptor. Feels like he’s gummed up the Pacers by turning Haliburton into more of a facilitator and making him work on offense. – 9:03 PM

More on this storyline

Does Van Gundy think the Knicks will let the loss impact them in Game 2? “They’ll look at the mistakes and pick themselves (up) and get ready to go. I don’t think (Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau) has to worry about (hangover from Wednesday’s loss) at this time of year,” Van Gundy said. “Their pick and roll defense to me, early on in the game, (Karl-Anthony) Towns was really back. (Myles) Turner was just getting wide-open shots. And then they had some miscommunications on perimeter screens; small-small (screens). Are we switching or not? They had breakdowns there. And then late in the game, they were really soft on their switches and (Aaron) Nesmith was hitting threes. To me, they’ve got to clean up their pick-and-roll coverages, being up and more aggressive. And their communication’s got to be a lot better on what they’re doing. “….There was not a hard three in that stretch (of Nesmith’s six threes late in the fourth quarter). It’s still hard to make six straight threes. But it wasn’t like the shot-clock ran down and someone had to throw one in. He got great looks. Nesmith, all five of his looks were great looks. And the one (Tyrese) Haliburton got, (Mikal) Bridges gave him a lot of space on that one, too. They got really good shots. I just thought the Knicks’ defense in that stretch was very soft. And in the overtime, they had breakdowns on (Obi) Toppin’s dunk and (Andrew) Nembhard’s back cut. They just, defensively, didn’t get the job done.” -via SportsNet New York / May 23, 2025

He was there postgame, pointing at Tyrese Haliburton after the brash young guard paid tribute to him by reenacting Miller’s famous choke gesture at the end of Game 5 of the 1994 Eastern Conference finals, when he scored 25 of his game-high 39 points in the fourth quarter and engaged in the legendary back-and-forth with Spike Lee that spawned a 30 for 30, “Winning Time,” in 2010. Haliburton said he’s watched that documentary “probably 50 times” growing up and had been waiting — over the course of two separate playoff series — for the right moment to reenact Miller’s “choke” gesture in front of the MSG crowd. “That’s just a historic moment,” Haliburton said after the game. “Obviously him versus Spike, kind of the one-on-one. I felt like [my gesture] was kind of to everybody. But to [Miller], too. I wanted him to see it more than anything.” -via ESPN / May 22, 2025
There was one historical echo that could be a bright spot for Knicks fans, however. Haliburton even pointed it out after the game. “I know that they didn’t win the series,” Haliburton recounted. The Knicks would come back to win that 1994 Eastern Conference finals in seven games. “So I would not like to repeat that.” -via ESPN / May 22, 2025
Detroit seems unlikely. Coach JB Bickerstaff’s defense-first play style doesn’t suit Jerome’s game and the Pistons are widely expected to prioritize free agent Malik Beasley. One source close to Ty Jerome viewed Detroit as a “longshot” — even though the Pistons need a steady backup behind All-Star Cade Cunningham. -via Cleveland Plain Dealer / May 22, 2025
More than four dozen players were nominated by PBWA members. Twenty-five finalists were selected by a PBWA subcommittee to create the official ballot, which was voted on by the entire membership. Players received two points for every first-team vote and one point for every second-team vote. McCollum (New Orleans Pelicans), Tyrese Maxey (Philadelphia 76ers), Georges Niang (Cleveland Cavaliers/Atlanta Hawks), Kristaps Porzingis (Boston Celtics), Austin Reaves (Los Angeles Lakers), Fred VanVleet (Houston Rockets) and Victor Wembanyama (San Antonio Spurs). -via Pro Basketball Writers / May 8, 2025
Omari Sankofa II: Trajan Langdon on Cade Cunningham: “He had an incredible year. Stats wise he was fantastic, he got better, but … he hadn’t driven winning and he was the driver of winning for us this year. That’s the biggest and hardest step to take, turning your stats into being meaningful and driving winning.” -via Bluesky / May 7, 2025
